Rising Floodwaters
Dongting Lake, Hunan Province, China
March and September 2002
Dongting Lake, in China's Hunan Province, lies near the Yangtze River. In the summer, abundant rainfall often leads to flooding. Dikes and channels divert floodwaters into holding ponds, where the water may be used during dry times. The right image shows the lake under hazy atmospheric conditions. The image on the left, taken six months later, reveals the swollen lake during flooding.
